Batteries Put 3 Batteries In Saltwater Today

Along with my absence was the stockpile of Rc parts and electronics on my shelf. As I have been moving into my new office I was going through things and I told the wife that I needed to go through my batteries and check them out, and good thing I did. I had one of my original 2200mah 3s packs from way back in 2011 that was puffed and looked like a blue potato. It didn't leak, it wasn't damaged, just severely puffed from being my most used battery. I also had some batteries that I was playing with but they were oddball so they went into the Saltwater as well.

I just tossed some iodized salt into some hot water and put the batteries in there after cutting off the leads and watched the bubbles form. And yes, I did this outside as the hydrogen gas (pretty sure) is not that great concentrated inside your home lol. This was about 5 hours ago and they were still bubbling when I went out there to check on them just a bit ago.

I know D.O.G. had some lipo failures and I'm seriously thinking about doing something more secure with the batteries, I just don't know what. Ammo cans just seems like a great way to destroy multiple batteries at once, the sand fall option takes up more space than I have available and yea, Not sure what to do with them. But lipo safety is definitely on my mind.

Sorry, no video, it's just bubbles in water lol.

Hey there Tony. Long time. Yes, I did have 3 lipo fires in the 12/13yrs flying. 2 in the house, which was scary. I have 2 battery charging system, but now I only charge one battery at a time instead of two, thanks to Geena advice, I put the single battery to charge in a lipo battery bag, which I put inside an ammo can. Last thing I do, I put everything in my mother-in-law house stand up bathroom. It's tile all the way around. This won't stop the fire, which can't be stopped, but it will contain it till the lipo battery burns up and goes out on its own.

Ceramic... That's not a bad idea. Or fire brick. If I can get some fire bricks, I can make "pouches" for the batteries so if one goes off, the rest are unaffected. May just have to start shopping around.

Yeah you can't stop a lipo battery from burning up but if you can contain it...it's a plus.

I do fused balance charging boards helps mitigate any disasters. The boards also have protection circuits on all balance leads. This is the best thing I ever did for charging safety.
I use 2 boards on a dual output charger.
