I use 2 different irons, one is a Radio Shack adjustable version the other an old Weller 40w that my dad had. I use the Weller for most things, and the adjustable one for heavier duty stuff like EC3 connectors....EC5 I just use a "bakers touch".

I only use the hakko 936. It is by far the best iron I have ever owned. And I have had it for many years.

If you are looking for a first station then get something in the 60W or 65W range, if possible. Whether its hakko, Weller or what ever. This will cover you for almost any RC related soldering. Ensure it has interchangeable tips along with replaceable tips. I have weller and stand by it, hakko is also a great brand if you have the money for it. One other thing I would do is add a butane soldering Iron/Torch to your tool box. These things come in super handy.
