This morning... for some minor fun... I began a troll on a spammer on another forum that I admin/moderate
Most of the spammers I see on this now mostly defunct forum... are what I call "link back" spammers. They simply post a URL back to the site they are spamming for either in their user account info or in a post on the forum. The majority are linking to viagra related sites and such but others link to other commercial sites as well. ( No doubt Tony is familiar with this type of spammer, this info is for others here that aren't ). My typical action for these types is to delete the account and any posts they've made, check the IP address the user was using and see if it's from a known IP range that spammers use and if so add an IP block for the range of IP's known to be from spammers.
This latest one had me chuckling ( at what they were attempting to do to hide their link back ). First, they'd directly copied a post directly from a 10 year old help thread for someone having problems getting Blender ( a free 3D Graphics editor software ) to work with their now 10 year old computer running Vista 64b. Basically, the original post stated they couldn't run Blender without getting an error and they suspected that their video card was the culprit and was wanting a suggestion as to what to replace it with.
Had they not linked to the original post from 10 years back... it would have been less obvious ( I still would have checked out the URL link anyway ). The absurd part is thinking that someone with a problem from 10 years ago would still be trying to find a solution and wouldn't have already replaced that video card with something else or found the actual fix their system may have needed.
So first... I did my admin/moderator job... I edited out the link back URL they'd added stating that it was an unrelated url in the edit description... That being done... I went along with the post with a quick reply to troll the spammer a bit...
I mentioned that they will likely have a hard time finding a new video card that would support Vista 64b ( a 12 year old OS ) on 10 year old equipment both of which would limit their available choices to the used market. Next.... I asked them to list the steps they have already taken to try to resolve the issue under the pretense that we didn't want to suggest something they've already tried.
I doubt I'll get a response.... but it was some quick fun to see if they would respond none the less.
