It has been a while since I built a new plane.
So I splurged and ordered an Air Titan. You can check it out HERE
My plane is huge for an EPO plane....
This is a pic of the motor and battery it uses pushing a 15x8 prop.
6s 10,000 .... boy is this a big battery, this is truley a brick.

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

Holy crap, you are going to need a huge plane to lift all of that weight lmao. Can't wait to see it in the air.

That's practically... a drone! Ban it!

:)

Looks cool. Can strap a smaller plane under the wing and use it as a mid air launch carrier.

WHOA!!! That's a monster battery and a monster motor and a monster plane! I'm looking forward to seeing some ground footage of this one flying. Very cool, Craig!!!

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

Thanks Guys.... I was wanting a good stable plane to fly on the windier days. I have my little 36" FPV wing but it is a bumpy ride in the wind.
So with a 8' 5" wing should make it a smooth ride.
The only thing I hate is I am working so much I don't have much time to build. But I will have to find a little here and there.

Yep the battery is huge, it weighs just over 3lbs. I think they said the test plane was about 12lbs + and still climbed out real well.

I think on this one I will go with a 5.8gHz system. The video always seems to be clearer than my 1.3gHz, 5.8gHz will have shorter range but I want be flying over 2 miles anyway.

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

I hope I can get started on my plane this weekend, it is killing me to see it sitting in the box. I will be off Sunday so I will try to get some of the build started.
But I have been busy buying items for the build.
I picked up a Skylark Dianmu OSD with RTH
Also a Finwing 390 Pan + Tilt Module I will be using this with the FatShark Trinity Head Tracker Module
Also I Picked up a SmartFPV - 3 Way RC Video Switch I was going to have 3 cameras mounted on the plane. Two facing forward and one facing down.
GoPro 3 Black, and 2 other cameras. I was thinking of adding a second camera that could record in HD. I have been looking at the Mobius Action Camera - 1080P HD Maybe they will get the Wide Lens Version in soon.

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

Well got to spend a little time with my Titan....
DAMN this plane is big... I didn't really notice how big it was till I got it out of the box.

Here are a few pics of the kit and hardware...

This is a 8FT table the box is sitting on.

03-AirTitan.JPG

That is a Yard stick by the fuze

07-AirTitan.JPG

The landing gear is stainless steel

05-AirTitan.JPG

04-AirTitan.JPG

The wing spars slide right into the Aluminum tubes

14-AirTitan.JPG

I have two different canopies
One is shorter than the other it is called the cloud canopy

12-AirTitan.JPG

As you can see the fuze is over 5ft long

11-AirTitan.JPG

10-AirTitan.JPG

09-AirTitan.JPG

I like this feature, It has a tall wheel if you pull up to hard on take off the tail want drag, just roll... :)

Now to build the wings...

What I like is they give you all the extensions you need for your control surfaces

16-AirTitan.JPG

You can see how the wing spars slide right into the tubes, I will be putting glue on the tubes
and the sections right beside them.

15-AirTitan.JPG

I use painters tape to hold the spar covers in place till they dry

17-AirTitan.JPG

The kit has carbon rods with plywood to keep you from having any flex of an aileron

18-AirTitan.JPG

19-AirTitan.JPG

Now these are hinges that want break LOL
you know your plane is heavy duty when the hinges are metal

20-AirTitan.JPG

21-AirTitan.JPG

I stood on a 6ft ladder and still can't get all the wing in the pic....

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

Holy... wow. That's big. Too bad it doesn't have dedicated flaps. With the heavy lift and fpv purpose it may well have benefited from the low speed capability. Still a great looking plane though. And that head tracking pan-tilt setup. Drewl. :)

Re: I have a new FPV plane to Build

I am working every evening for an hour or so when i get home... May just have to fly it with out the OSD and RTH the first few flights. But for sure have to have the Head Tracker working.

Got a little more done ...

I might have got more done if I didn't want to fix everything that does not fit as tight as I would like it to be.
First point in case.

It got time to install my control horns on my wing. I noticed that there was to much slop for my taste... :p

As you can see here the screw is tight but you still have a gap and play in the connector.

24-AirTitan.JPG

So the fix for this was to shorten the adjustment screw so not to bottom out before it got tight.

25-AirTitan.JPG

This is how much I shorter the screw needed to be.

26-AirTitan.JPG

Now you can see it fits much better no slop in the control linkage.

27-AirTitan.JPG28-AirTitan.JPG

Now on to the dual rudders.... I think it is cool having 2 rudders

29-AirTitan.JPG

First step was to reinforce the hinges with tape.
My pick for hing tape has always been 3M/Scotch storage tape
it seems to stick very well and is not as thin as some of the cheaper tapes.

30 -AirTitan.JPG

31-AirTitan.JPG

Servos installed and leads covered with hot glue to fill the gap

32-AirTitan.JPG

Time to put the elevator together
I also put tape on the bottom side of the elevator hinge

The eleavtor has 2 carbon tubes one top and bottom also the same carbon
tube with ply reinforcements to make it strong and stiff

This is the rod and ply
33-AirTitan.JPG

this is the slots they fit into.
34-AirTitan.JPG

As I said the elevator is big, as you can see it has a carbon tube on top and bottom to keep it stiff.

35-AirTitan.JPG

Check out the yard stick

36-AirTitan.JPG

Which put the eleavotor at 31.5 inches wide, LOL that is bigger than some of my plane wings LOL
37-AirTitan.JPG

Woooo Hooooo I have all control surfaces done now time to start on the fuze.

Wow, that thing is HUGE!
I assume you transport it with the wings off?
Would need a large truck otherwise. :)
Where do you take off and land something like that?
Wait till no cars and use the road? :)

Yeah it is big... I didn't know how big it really was till I got it all out of the box...
Yep wing off for transport.

Here is how it breaks down

Oh yeah I had time to put the tail together
