You guys are great at solving ALL KINDS of problems. Does anyone know where I get a firmware update on my back?

As Randy stated, we are fine. Everything well south of us.
So two days ago, there was a smell in the house when I woke up. The wife had a hair apt so I just figured she used a new dye before she went. Turns out, she was thinking that I did something lol.
I could not for the life of me figure out what this smell was/is. At the time of this post, I still have not pin pointed the smell. However, I noticed that one of my cameras was offline. So I opened up my switch GUI and I saw this for port 38, my POE camera port.
Port 38 was on, it is now off (indicated by red rather than green). The first box after that is the POE state. As you can see it is ON, however, the next box is Operation, and you can see that it is off. Then, on the far right, "Internal Hardware Fault".... I need to take the switch offline and open it up to see if it let the smoke out. I'm thinking that may have been what I have been smelling, but with the coating that is on the board, I just didn't recognize the smell. I do have another switch that I can use for parts, so not a big deal if something did die. I just want this damn smell out of my house lol.

So I went in and pulled the server and switch offline and removed them. Brought the switch into the office and pullled the top cover off. This is what I was met with.....
As you can see, the far right POE Power is completely trashed. In the 4th picture, that capacitor didn't blow... It was so hot right there that it unsoldered from the board!
I do not know what caused the fault, but I have replaced the board and I'm about put it back online to see if this happens again.
I included the wide shots so that you can see it was 1 of 4 POE Power sections. If I wanted to, I could have just moved my POE items over to the next block and it may have worked. However, I want this friggin board out of the house lol. Man this is a very unique smell. I know what electronics smell like when they go, however this was not the regular smell.
The source is found at least. Will post updates later on how it is working with the new POE Power board.

Cooling is not the issue. It was not hot in the server closet by any means. I think that IC just decided it was his time, and took everything around him with him. Just one of those things. Again, I could have just swapped over to the 25-36 bank and it would have worked again without swapping out the board. But, that will be in the back of my mind for a while.

Tony, I'm confused, what is this board for? Security camera system? Or your web site server?
Heck when I burnt a charger, the smell was rank! I love the smell of new electronics but if its fried, forget about it...

POE is short for "power over ethernet". In short, it is a specification that allows a certain amount of power to devices on the other end of network cables, typically around 48v. This allows you to connect both the network connection and power needs of a device within one wire. In this case, the POE was provided within the switch itself but you can also use an injector to provide power separate from the switch. Since Tony was powering several cameras, it was more cost efficient to use a switch with enough POE ports on it than to use separate power injectors for each.

So on a network, you are going to have quite a few different devices that are hard wires into the system. A standard router that you purchase at the store will only have about a 4 port switch on the back (4 ports to plug stuff into plus the WAN port (internet port, or Wide Area Network port). A switch like I have is what you would find in a server farm to route from the router to more than 4 devices. In my case, I have a 48 port POE switch. Meaning, I can connect 48 separate devices to my switch. I think that makes sense.

While I am studying my security+ material I continued with the lab bench. once I get the sec+ material done I will switch back to Cisco. The army is driving the sec+ cert and since they are footing the bill I might as well get it done.
I still have more work I want to do. I still want to close in 3 sides. This particular design that I got has a hidden useful flaw. The 2x4 uprights could have been put on the inside of the top self. The usefulness of what I did was I made cable runs without having to drill holes in the plywood.
My next expense is the maple ply and 2 monitors. I am thinking of either going with Samsung or MSI, not sure yet. I also need to get power cables that are all consistent and a few more network cables. The white client cables are 3 foot, I need a about 3 that are 7 foot for the laptops. Then I need some kind of lighting under the shelf.

I get it now,, awesome! Years ago I had a Linksys 4 switch router. No POE though... Now I recognize the term, switch... All I have now is this stock thing from our local cable company.. Here's a photo of my li'll unit. It looks like a 3 switcher.. 1 Ethernet and 2 for the phone... The box for the tv is on the other side of the cable split...
As for the POE part.. That makes total sense when I think about it. You gotda get power from some where. The POE ports and cables make power destitution nice and nifty...
Oh murankar,, like the wood work... I like to make my own stuff if I can...
Hey guys,, look close at the coaxial cable input to the modem/router... See that black thing on the top of the cable? That's what's left behind from these pesky geckos that constantly invade the house. Years ago one got into the tv and shorted out the power supply for the picture driver. Because the tv was only a year old, I replaced the board. Now that it's over 12 years old the picture is fading to white from the top... Maybe time for a new one. Yeah sure, why not, everything else in this dump busted, LOL!

Hey is anyone into astronomy?
I just dabble for sure but think a computer controller for the scope is a must.
I broke out my little Meade ETX-60 AT after a few years of storage. I found that the objective lens, (two curved lens with a spacer between the two),, was all fogged up. The space between the two lens was where the fog was.. That was easy to clean.
I also discovered that the text read out that scrolls across the screen was all dim and distorted. I managed to adjust the contrast of the read out but it ain't right; still much better for now..
I was online looking for more information on the complete disassembly of the scope so I could maintain what ever I needed to. While I was at it, I found a good article about how to modify the optics of this here scope. I put to much flat black paint on the outside of the focus baffle, I think that's what it called, it gummed up the focus operation. Easy fix though, just sand down the baffle where it contacts the telescopes outer tube... Now she slides nice and smooth..
The optical upgrade is supposed to cut down the reflected light bouncing around the interior of the scope. This scope does have many shiny surfaces in it,, not good... The article also mentions that the side edges of the objective lens should be painted flat-black too... Ok; if they say so...….
Now I need a decent tripod. I'm tired of trying to level the garbage bin on a waisted 51 year old asphalt driveway, ha! And if you want to take the scope into the fields somewhere, forget about it! Need a dang tripod already..

I dabble a bit every now and then... although I was seriously into it many years back. Currently I'm just I'm just using a Meade Polaris 130 ( 5" ) which is good for the amount I get out and view anything with it. I've got a 16" Meade as well but the stand got completely rusted tight and the mirror is in need a a re-mirror job, so it just sits in the back room for the time being. I've also got a 6" Cassegrain that the drive clutch got loose and I've not been able to fix properly. The computer controlled scopes where just coming out as my budget dropped to a point that I couldn't afford to get one, then the prices just sky rocketed after that... so I don't see getting one anytime soon.

Go Tony go!! …………. I want to see the progress of your garden this year. My neighbor is growing sweet potatoes and Kalu and stuff like that. Trouble is, the former golf course field behind the houses here has completely returned to jungle status. Now the mountain boars come all the way down from the mountains behind the houses and raid peoples gardens. They dug up all my neighbors plants by the roots and ate everything... If they touch my pineapples, I'll bring in a guy I know, he has a nice compound bow.
I saw him in action at my brothers house a couple of miles from here. He's closer to the mountains than us. Several years ago, he and his neighbors were having the same problem. The pigs would come down the mountains at the same time in the afternoon everyday. BIG mistake. One afternoon we were all sit'n and waiting for them to arrive. We could actually hear them coming.. Next thing you know, 1, 2, 3, 4 pigs walk right out into the open.. Nobody makes a sound and my friend stands up with the bow and takes aim. He shoots! He scores!! He hit it right behind the left front leg.
At first I didn't think he hit it because they all just paused for a second. Then they all ran back the way they came. My hunter friend spotted a blood trail and followed it for about 20 yards before he found the target. He took it home and made some good kalua pork. Um!, Um!, Um!, Um!, Um!.... Oh and we never saw any of his friends again after that, LOL!
Hey Randy, is that Meade 16" scope you have a Dobbsonian or a Schmitt Cassigrain?
Also, when you say re-mirror job, are you referring to a mirror replacement or is there a way to restore mirrors and lens coatings??
About your 6" Cassigrain, you said the drive clutch is slipping..
Is the drive for just moving the scope? You know without turning mechanical knobs...
When I saw the photo above of comet Lovejoy, I thought is was a photo like the one taken at the Geminid meteor shower party we were at in Dec. 2018... My friends had 3 nice digital cameras shooting 20 second exposures all night long. We got many killer shots.
Like this photo of comet Wirtanen , circled in red and a nice Geminid meteor streaking in from the lower left..
Anyway I tried to send pictures again with no luck. I don't know what's going on this time so use your imaginations. Ha!

Hey there Rob. About sending pictures. They might be too big. Install Photoscape which will shrink your photo to fit the site. Give that a try.
Certainly ( and always ) a good suggestion ... I know I've seen others post pics without issues... but I've had problems even when I've resized them down also so now I just link the ones I post to those I've got hosted on my own website. So there is at least a problem with posting pics on either certain accounts or something.
