Marius' learning to fly - "video diary"

You say details will follow, but I see no details. What happened? Crashes happen, it's just a part of the hobby. I'm sure you will have it in the air in no time.

I can give you the details, but the pics will have to wait until I get home from work.

I was out flying at the same site as the day before. It was my second flight, and I was practicing my tail down funnels. It was going GREAT! But then, about mid way through my 10th consecutive funnel (a big one - the bird was far away atm) the tail blew out!! I don't know how - but I remained surprisingly calm through the whole ordeal. The bird was spinning like crazy with no response to my tail inputs - the tail drive had given out.

I did try the cyclic for a brief moment, but with way too little practice on how to save a bird with no tail control - I decided to do a controlled crash. I brought her down as far as I dared before flipping TH. I misread the altitude (again, it was far away, like 350 yards), the blades stalled, and the bird dropped out of the air from maybe 30 feet.

As there was some spectators, I walked instead of ran down to the crash site. The poor thing. It sat there, just twitching. The motor seemed to be trying to spool - sort of. But I was able to hold it back with my hands. I took off the canopy, and unplugged the battery - the twitching stopped.

It was horrible. Looked like something out of a car crash - my poor JR...

__

As it still is lying on the bench, I haven't gotten to see what ALL the damage is. But ATM:

  • One 6S battery pack totaled
  • One main blade
  • Landing gear
  • Entire frame including battery compartment
  • Bent main shaft
  • Bent tail rod

As for the Servos, Rx, ESC and motor: I still don't know. All I know is, this is gonna get expensive.

Yeah, that is what worries me about my 600. I just dont' trust those tail gears for longevity. Really thinking about SAB just because it's a belt tail with large gears.

All you can do is tear it apart and find out everything that is wrong with it. I would definitely look into why that tail gave way and see about fixing that issue. I hate it when human error is NOT the cause of an expensive crash.

What you're onto now, is EXACTLY what I'm contemplating. The JR's problem is the front tail gear. I've taken this one out before - it's a poor quality part. If JR had something like Align with those super gears, I would get one immediately - but they don't.

I cannot put the blame entirely on JR - as I DID hear the tail screaming through the funnels. But none the less, this is supposed to be a hard 3D bird - by my standards, it's should take the beating.

That's why I might just be getting a Goblin. We'll see - I'll have to go through my finances first LOL :D

Tony I sent you a link to the new align black gears. There not that expensive. Only a couple of bucks more that the stock gears.

Sorry to here about the crash Marius. I'm shure you will have her fixed up in no time. Good luck.

Ouch man, thats sounds like a good crash with the frames and all. Maybe a complete re-kit. If it is that far gone, you may consider selling the good bits as spares and transfer servos etc to a new model like the Goblin as you are thinking already.
Sorry dude, it hurts big time.

OUCH! yeah that is a bad crash.. But I am sure you'll be up and running soon ..

I repaired my frame using some epoxy and glass fibre or carbon fibre peices screwed on to the two sides of thew crack.. I had three cracks to repair.. but it all depends on the damage you got

Its all good bro! Thats how we learn :)

Nice Marius,
I thought you were going to make snow angels with the blades in the last inverted section :D

Me Too ... Wow IMpressive. you are really good!

21°F (-6°C) and BEAUTIFUL weather here today - perfect flying conditions.

Working on my funnels, tic tocs, backwards flight and inverted orientations.

You are getting those funnels sorted! looks like you have been flying for years! I have to go out and fly today.... watching that has pushed me!!!!

I am really sorry to hear about the Crash. What sort of 600 is it? can the tail be converted to align? Just a thought.

Thanks Lee. I will be considering my options for a while - not hurry.

Thanks Gaba. I'll be sure to practice malfunctions on the sim more from now on, that's for sure.

Sorry about that crash. Im not looking forward to my first crash. Good luck with the new kit/repair.

Thanks Matthias. I hope you do not crash any time soon :D

Thanks Westy. Get out there and fly buddy! It's a JR Vibe E8. I do not think any Align parts will fit on this.

So here's the horror show:

Both main frame sides totaled

P1010874.JPG

Battery compartment cracked - this I think I can repair.
P1010875.JPG

P1010876.JPG

P1010877.JPG

Landing gear
P1010878.JPG

Main blade (one blade survived)
P1010879.JPG

P1010880.JPG

P1010881.JPG

Boom bent
P1010882.JPG

Tail support rod bent
P1010883.JPG

Main shaft bent
P1010884.JPG

Either the one way bearing or the shaft sleeve is bent - not sure, but the thing feels weird when rotated
P1010885.JPG

Tail servo leads severed (not sure if servo is functioning)
P1010886.JPG

My almost brand new canopy cracked
P1010890.JPG

  • Motor is working - but suspect bearings might be slightly damaged
  • ESC housing is cracked but unit is working
  • All cyclic servos are working
  • AR7200BX is working

And last, but certainly not least; the culprit - the son of a bi*ch - the cause of my nightmare; the front tail gear box:

Both gears completely stripped bare

If you want Marius, I can show the frames to my friend here. He is a master at repairing anything made of carbon. He just repaired a carbon mountain bike. His day job is repairing surf and windsurf boards, and designing fins for the boards. He could repair those frames easy.
I would be sending those photos of the drive gears to JR and asking what there gonna do about your crash repair bill.

i AM Cringing!!!!! ..... OUch .... I feel your pain ... all those painstaking hours setting up and assembling all to come to this moment..... I would see if they will come to the party......

I would definitely be contacting JR about this. That frame is showing weak spots resulting in what you have in front of you. That is just not right. And as Lee said, include the pics of the front drive gears and explain that was the whole cause of the crash.

Looking at that last photo, are there shims at the top of that to keep the vertical gear from moving up and down?

I appreciate that Lee, but don't bother. This bird will not be re-built any time soon. I will send my pics to JR and see if I get a response.

Ouch that hurts to look at. :(

When I compare the JR E8 frame to other similar sized birds, the JR frame does not look as rigid. Also, the thin long cut outs (for pulling velcro through) make up weak spots on a already poor frame design. I believe an Align, Compass or Mikado frame might have tackled the crash better.

I will send my pics to JR and see if I get a response.

There are no shims in the front gear box - but there is not vertical play, it's in there good. The gears just can't handle the torque.

Ouch! Marius!! That is bad. I hope you can get something from JR for that! It looks like a total to me anyways. Good luck!

Sorry that this happened to you dude. Esp when the culprit is 5 dollar gear. Yes that is a rebuild. I guess the JR wont handle a lot of torque / power. Making the gears good for nitro not for electric ( ???).. Whatever it is. I feel for you bro. This was nasty and YES JR needs to answer you.

If you are looking for some cheap but exactly same quality or may be better parts for the Vibe line, RJX made a bird which used a lot of VIBE parts. Esp the one way. I know for my older Vibe, the one way itself is 90 bucks or something stupid like that. RJX one is 1/4 the price and works well (on nitro Vibe) . See if anything there might help you repair this a bit cheaper when you do ..

May be decresing the Gear ratio to reduce the torque "MIGHT" be something to look into if you havent looked into already.. but . nevertheless Hoping to hear from you soon on what you find out :/

Marius, i feel for you man, oouch that looks nasty

Thanks Kev

Thanks Gaba. I'm not sure whether the electrics are more torqy than nitros - but I still feel these gears should be up for the task.

Good news!

I got a reply from JR Propo, and they are offering to send me a new frame and tail gears for free :D They could however not see any wrong with my setup, nor have they gotten any other complaints on the tail gears. But they did mention that the gears should be greased before every flight, and that non greased gears might have caused them to strip.

I'm guessing that since the manual does not mention the greasing of gears, they are willing to "stretch" their good will on to me :D
