When performing big banked "scale type" turns, my tail seems to get a little wag. It's a short, but fast wag. Add, or reduce gain?

When arriving at the the ramp today.

The HORROR! :(

WP_000119.jpg

Well, it was left alone for almost a month. And that's not bad.
Last time someone disturbed it, the ramp was chucked in the woods.
This time, it's only been tipped over, and the camo net had been ripped off the nails.
Guess some kids couldn't leave it alone :heart-borken:

One of the support struts had broke off, but I managed to "repair" it.
The ramp was perfectly usable afterwards. I had lift-off within 5 minutes :)
Boys will be boys, I guess.

I recon this is by far the coolest one I got by now!
Very happy :D :D :)

Well, I have been waiting for this day a long time now.
It had to happen eventually...

Me and my buddy were out on a parking lot as he is still training his hovering. In between his flights, I fired up my 450 and showed off a bit - it was going very well. I was flying big, doing loops and inverted hovers close to the ground. Just as he had used up all his packs, I was just gonna drain my last pack before going home. At this point I was getting real confident and a little bit "frisky".

I had been hovering inverted between a parking sign and a giant lamp post many times - maybe 5 feet off the ground. It was after doing some tic tocs, I came down to the same place, decided to flip it back to inverted in the same spot. In the backwards flip to invert, I realize I'm waaaay to close to the ground and choose to abort; I instantly try to flip it forwards while it's loosing altitude, the bird's straightening out and she glides backwards into the left sign post.

The bird was tail inn, and backed towards me fast! The tail of the bird hit the back of this sign.

WP_000125.jpg

Could clearly see where the tail guard bracket had smacked into the sign.
Yes, there was a big bang...

WP_000124.jpg

AND THE LUCK! OH MY GOD THE LUCK!

The tail bracket snapped off, flying out in cosmos.
My buddy was shouting; "LAND, LAND, LAND".
Unbelievable enough, the bird was still flying!!
I a panic, I just set her down in the gravel around the sign post.

The bird seems very much whole and working :D

Damage report:

Tail bracket.
Tail blades.
Front tail gear stripped.
Maybe bent boom.

She's on the work bench now, being disassembled.

Thats what happens when your showing off!!! LOL.

I'll promise you this, Sam, I've learnt my lesson!

very lucky escape :D

Absolutely.

I've looked over the whole bird now, and the damage is luckily very limited.

I'm not sure if this blade hit the sign post, but I found this dent/crack.

Tail case looking good.

Tail blades probably took this damage when landing in the gravel.

Tail bracket took the worst of it.
P1010067.JPG

Front tail drive box. The gear which is connected to the shaft got some teeth stripped.
P1010069.JPG

I was concerned the boom might be bent, but it was fine :)
P1010071.JPG

Went over the entire drive gear assembly, all good :)
P1010072.JPG

The gear on the right took the most beating.

The main shaft looks straight, can't know for sure until repairs are completed.
Spares have been ordered. Hope to be in the air within three days ;)

Re: Marius' learning to fly - "video diary"

Those main blades are toast. Don't try to fly with blades like that. Tail blades as well. The heli will still fly with that vertical stab broke so no need to worry about that. And I would remove the main and feathering shaft and roll them on some glass to check it. Nothing like a vibration to mess up a gyro and cause a crash lol.

This right here is why I tell people to never learn how to fly with a buddy. They will talk you into doing things that are beyond their level. I'm not saying what you were doing was beyond your level, but you did hit a sign lol. You have to be one of the luckiest guys I know with that heli. Just stick in a new gear, replace all of the blades, and check the shafts and she will be ready for the air once again.

By the way, can I borrow some of your luck? I seem to have run out of all of mine...

Oh and something like this is why I said before to record EVERYTHING even if you don't upload it. You never know when something will happen. Every crash is a learning experience for another. Explain what happened and maybe the next person will learn from the mistake.

I already have a new set of main and tail blades in stock, as I knew I'd probably need them sooner or later. LOL
I also have feathering shaft with assembly in stock, so I'm good if I find something wrong there.
New vertical fin, vertical fin assembly, and front gears set has been ordered.

This was completely my own fault, my buddy was just sitting there not saying a word. And it was a stupid mistake, as I do know I shouldn't have been flying in between obstacles - so one could regard that as flying out of skill level. But as I stated previously; I was feeling very good about my flying, forgot to take a second to "reset" my mind - just kept on going.

As for the recording; I don't like to record while flying with friends, as they seem to get uncomfortable knowing that what they say will be recorded - this fact applies to me as well. But I see your point.

I think I may have spent all my luck on this one, so I don't think I can spare you any at the moment Tony :D

Your doing fine Marius, lol. Hell you could be like me and crash 4 out of 5 flights! That's why I gave up on my 600 and now it's just a show piece!
